A trenc d'alba Portada

A trenc d’alba. Conception

Catalan original

The idea of writing A trenc d'alba (At dawn) arose over 20_. I write songs from youngster but for practically all my life my main concern was to understand the Catalan social and political reality and, by extension, nationhood and the sense of history. Once I reached the relevant explanations, I decided to concentrate on the project of the composition and publication of an album. From the 16 years in which I had written the first song, I have always been composing because, in fact, I can not avoid it. I'm always singing and suddenly, decided to do it or not, a new song appears. Thus, over the years, I have written many songs. At that time, moreover, I was finishing university studies on audiovisual communication and, for evaluating, I was asked to do a short film. I thought that it would be a good idea to write the corresponding music. Suddenly, my imagination was excited.

After a short time I had four instrumental themes to wear the short film (Eqvs Llummare, Instrumental 1, Instrumental 2 and another song that, finally, I decided reject) but also a lot of new songs that soon I thought it might be part of a new album called Canal obert (Open channel). It’s better forget the short film. It has not the least value. But the songs still coming and, shortly, while I was writing Canal obert (Open channel), I had already written a second album that, after several attempts, I gave the name to A trenc d’alba (At dawn).

Finally I decided concentrate on the production of A trenc d’alba (At dawn)and leave Canal obert (Open channel)for later. I don’t know the reason. I guess the songs that integrate it mean too much to me and go in front of the other.

La noia de la botiga de fruites: "I mama, saps?, a la nit, si et fixes bé, els estels hi són fins ben bé a trenc d'alba..."

The album title is part of the lyrics of the song La noia de la botiga de fruites (The fruits shop girl). For a while, the album named Ultramort, as the song, but, although I really like the word, and the song even more, I found it too dark. I wanted to write a work compensated with a mixture of happy and sad songs, light and dark, comic and tragic, because, as I understand it, we're all in this way, we live best and worst moments.

In any case, if any idea had to prevail over others, this would be my great satisfaction, and why not: my pride for my first published songs. I had already published own and alien books and articles on philosophy and history. Now I had to exert myself to publish my music. My family, my friends, almost everyone agrees with the opinion that my songs are pretty, some, of course, more than others.

Many people, often, do this comment so curious: my songs are better than those they listen to the radio. From time to time, at home, or some fried, when they want to play a joke on me, repeat the sentence of a song of mine: fot-li que encara som vius (come on/fuck him that we are still alive), quins melons... (what a melons...), la vida m’ha tractat molt injustament (the life has treated me very unfairly), xucla’m el cor (absorb me the heart)... There was no excuse.

Finally, mulling the title, I opted for A trenc d’alba (At dawn). Thus, in addition to raise a happy idea, I also would expose my public recognition and my immense gratitude to my piano teacher, Alba Masafrets, who owe everything. Not only do I owe the teaching that I received. I owe above all the safety of the conviction that, in addition to the philosopher, I am a musician.

One last point finished setting the title. The first album by Pink Floyd is called The piper at the gates of dawn (El flautista a les portes de l’alba).

The Wind in the Willows, Kenneth Grahame (1908), work on which Syd Barrett inspired to write The piper at the gates of dawn
